Stevie Riley didn't grow up wanting to be a lawyer. She spent 16 years working real jobs — as a janitor in Vermont, a bicycle taxi driver in New Orleans, and years of labor, retail, and customer service. She knows what it's like to be a regular person caught in a system that doesn't care about regular people.
That's why she went to law school. She hated the United States' system of mass incarceration but had no power against it as a non-lawyer. So she enrolled at Lewis & Clark Law School — working full-time while attending evening classes — and graduated magna cum laude. She passed the bar and became a public defender.
Since March 2025, Stevie has been a public defender at Vancouver Defenders, handling hundreds of misdemeanor cases at every stage — from arraignment through resolution. She's in Clark County District Court every day, arguing motions, negotiating with prosecutors, and trying cases before judges who know her by name.
Her path to the courtroom wasn't traditional. But that's exactly why she's the attorney you want. She understands her clients because she's lived in their world. Proven Results
Physical Control Case — Not Guilty
In February 2026, Stevie won a bench trial in Clark County District Court. Her client was charged with Physical Control — a gross misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail. Despite a blood-alcohol level of .20 (more than twice the legal limit), Stevie successfully argued the affirmative defense that her client was safely off the roadway and attempting to do the right thing.
Judge James Smith agreed, ruling that while the situation wasn't ideal, the client was ultimately trying to make a responsible choice. The case demonstrates Stevie's ability to find creative legal arguments and persuade the court — even when the facts appear unfavorable at first glance.
